There is a wide variety of woodworking tools available to woodworkers, each with a specific job. The tools used in woodwork are devided into five key groups:
  1. Support tools
  2. Geometrical tools
  3. Cutting tools
  4. Striking tools

Only the most common of woodworking tools will be examined here, and represent the bare minimum every woodworker should have in their possession.

The Bench and Vice

This is the basic and most important 'tools' in the workshop. The bench top should be level and the vice flush with the surface of the bench. Keeping a clean workbench is essential for effeciency when woodworking.

Steel Rule

A reliable steel rule is invaulable when woodworking.
Measurements should be in millimetres, and the ends should be ground down so that measurements can be taken with ease.

Try Square

Try squares are comprised of two parts: The blade and the stock. These tools have three primary uses in the workshop: Firstly, it is used for ruling square lines across sections of wood. Secondly, it is used to test the squareness of ends. And Lastly,  to verify the accuracy of certain joints. Some try square blades contain measurements.

Marking Gauge

The steel tip of this insrument is set the desired distance from the stock and run along the wood, scoring the timber. Once this line has been established, a pencil line can be drawn over it. This tool differs from a mortise gauge, which has two pins.

Bench Plane

This is just one of a variety of planes. Planes are used on woodwork for smoothing timber, or levelling off unblanced wooden surfaces. Skill and concentration is needed when using a plane, as misuse can damage the timber. With a well sharpened and carefully honed plane blade, a plane can provide a smoother finish than abrasive paper.

(Carpenter's) Wooden Mallet

Mallets are commonly used in woodworking, and perform two main functions. While they are used for driving chisels, they are also used for knocking joints together for a snug fit. Their impact does not damage wood, whereas a hammer would dent the timber.

Warrington Hammer

This is just one of a list of different hammers. Unlike other hammers, though, this one is good for general use in woodworking, especially for knocking in pins and nails. The tapered end, known as the pein, is used for starting off small nails. Its tapered end reduces the chance of hitting fingers.

Paring Chisels

Again, this is only one type of an array of different chisels. Paring chisels are good general purpose chisels for woodworking, as their tapered edges enables the woodworker to reach in as close as possible for where it is needed. They can be bought in differing blade widths.

"G" Clamp

G clamps are often used to hold joints together till the glue dries. However, it is also effectively used in the securing of work to a bench while cutting, routing, sanding, etc. The clamps come in different sizes, and a small square of scrap should be positioned between the inner faces of the clamp to avoid damage to the work.

Electric (Handheld) Drill and Bits

Electric drills are a useful addition to any toolbox, as they are far easier to use than wheel braces. Drill bits usually come in sets, although they can be purchased separately. Although there are many different sizes of bits, they all perform the task of boring holes. Drills can also be used as screwdrivers (flathead and phillips), although it is useful to have a set of screwdrivers as well.
